A map of Overside

Overside is the fictional setting of Rice Boy and Order of Tales. It is the populated side of a disk-shaped planet, but the name can also refer to the whole world itself. Overside is dominated by three large continents: Acirca, Wusterim, and Grenth. While Acirca is the most detailed continent in Dahm's comics, the others also possess diverse peoples and cultures.

Contents

Major Continents

Acirca

Acirca (pronounced /ʌ.sɪɹ.kʌ/) is the continent that contains the bulk of the plot thus far in Rice Boy and Order of Tales. Notable locations include: Suntown, a major city in central Acirca; Sunk, the home of the Frog-Men; the Dorlish Wood, which contains the town of Dorl and the domain of the Tree Keeper; Stonepalm, a large stone hand that houses a Hornèd settlement; Tenshells, a city contained within ten enormous shells; and the Black Teeth, the home of the Machine Men.

Wusterim

Wusterim is south of Acirca, and separated from that continent by the Wustersea. Less is known about this continent, but some of Dahm's comics have been set here. As seen in The Tusks of Wusterim, the empire of Taragi covered much of the continent during the Green Age, before its later decline. Additionally, the barren ice-prison of Surya has been shown in Waiting in Surya. Wusterim was also the original location of the Order of Tales, before their migration to Acirca during the Blue Age.

Grenth

Grenth is described by Dahm as the "Silent Continent", as its inhabitants do not use sound to communicate.

Other Areas

Overside also has many smaller islands on its surface, such as the Suryan Isles in the Belsea between Wusterim and Grenth; the island of Fromb, which is the location of the Gecrimaug Barony; and a small, nameless (but important) island at the center of the Circle Sea.

Inhabitants

The inhabitants of Overside are varied in shape and size-- some are microscopic, like the Trills, while others like Slent or Brain Child tower above other creatures. The full list of characters illustrates the diversity of Overside, as well as listing the names of species for which a name is known.

Calendar

Main article: Overside Calendar

Overside follows a calendar whereby each group of roughly a thousand years, an Age, is given a name based on a certain color. The events of both Order of Tales and Rice Boy occur in the Red Age.

Writing Systems

Main article: Writing systems

While English text does appear on Overside, there are also writing systems native to that land that have been used in Dahm's comics. Seen-Script, which is used throughout Acirca, is the most commonly-seen script, although there is also a Machine-Script and writing systems for Frog-Men and Whettons.
