Arctaur is the "swirling violet historian"[1] of Whetton. He lives in the ruins of that city so as to be closer to the Tree of Thought, which Arctaur calls the "love of my life".[2] When Rice Boy passes through Whetton on his journey to find Parod, Arctaur tells him the story of Whetton's downfall.
Arctaur is a mysterious figure, since it is unclear how they seem to know about events from 200 years earlier. Arctaur also somehow knows that Parod lives in the Red Mountains, and that he may be "mad man"[3]).
