Backtown, with the Red Mountains in the distance

Backtown is a city on the southern border of the desert Skortch, in the portion of the Mountain Ring known as the Skortridge. All of the buildings and structures in Backtown are made from large pointed formations that seem to emerge naturally from the ground, reminiscent of termitaria or stalagmites. Instead of windows, buildings have vertical eye-shaped openings that are tinted red, and which seem to glow during the night.

Backtown is also the southern terminus of the Skortch Path, a long paved road that leads north across Skortch and through the Red Mountains. The northern end of the Path is unknown.[1]

In Chapter 26 and Chapter 28, Rice Boy, along with Yureg and the Grand Vizier, stops in Backtown on his way to see Parod. There, he encountered three masked people who may be inhabitants of Backtown. They do not allow him any water from a well, saying Rice Boy "cannot be trusted" and they cannot "be sure of what [he] would do with it".[2] This may indicate a view of trust or posession that is idiosyncratic to Backtown.
