Hornèds marching to war, from p039

The Hornèds are a species that mainly reside in the Hornspine in western Acirca, and who play a large part in both Rice Boy and Order of Tales. They form one of the most fleshed-out and complex species in the comics, and more named members of this species are encountered than any of other species (Machine Men are a close second). Hornèds are often characterized as warlike, and as such, the timidity of Hornèds like Gerund serves to play against this stereotype.

Naming

Hornèds derive their names from grammatical terms; clear examples of this are Gerund (whose name is non-altered from the term "gerund") and Adjetos (which comes from "adjective"). A full list of such meanings for names heard in the comics follows below:

Additionally (although this is not explored in Rice Boy), Hornèds have personal epithets, like "Holedweller" or "Rockturner", and are members of a named lineage, such as "Tower" or "Peak". Names are also often reused down these Hornèd lineages.[1] One can decipher the lineage and birth-order of a Hornèd from their shield, as Koark does on p178 when he finds Adjetos.

History

Hornèds have been historically separated into two groups: the Hornèds-of-the-Plain, and the Hornèds-of-the-Palm (also known as Lowland and Mountain Hornèds, respectively). In Nom's Saga, the Hornèds' take on the split between these two groups is described. In the first Red century, Nom Armforger, a Hornèd living under the rulership of King Gramat Holedweller, disobeyed his king's orders and led a group of 65 Hornèds (later known as the "Squires of Nom"[2]) to slay Vurcarre, an eight-legged dragon that had been harrowing the Hornèds for many years. After killing Vurcarre, the Hornèds proclaimed Nom their king, and created the first settlement in Stonepalm, which had been Vurcarre's lair.

The Mountain Hornèds later spread throughout the whole of the Hornspine, where they built Imfort to the north, along with other settlements and mines. The Lowland Hornèds made no contact with their northern cousins after around Red 150.
