The Hornspine is a mountain range in eastern Acirca that stretches from the Southern Digits to the meeting of the Sunk and Fueg Rivers. This region has been home to the Hornèds since the early Red Age, when Lowland Hornèd settlers moved from the plains of the south to the mountains, caves, and forests of the north. There are four significant Mountain Hornèd settlements in the Hornspine:

  • Stonepalm is a large hand of stone once inhabited by the dragon Vurcarre (according to Nom's Saga). It was settled by what became the Hornèds-of-the-Palm, or Mountain Hornèds, at the beginning of the Red Age. Both the area within the Palm, known as Above-Town, and the caves beneath, known as the Heart, have been developed and inhabited extensively. Stonepalm is linked to other Hornèd settlements by means of secret underground paths; one such path is the Track, which leads directly north to Imfort.[1]
  • Imfort is a settlement on the banks of the Sunk River, surrounded by Kom's Wood, a forest made of translucent trees that are hard as stone. Hornèds of Imfort have different dress and customs than those of Stonepalm, but they nevertheless answer to the Hornèd King. Imfort Hornèds make many tools and weapons out of Kom's wood, and export them throughout the Hornspine.
  • Silverspike is a mining-city directly northwest of Stonepalm, across the Fueg River. It is notable for its five enormous stone gates, which are inscribed with Hornèd stories and pictures. From the mines of Silverspike come all the metals used by Hornèds.
  • Imtower is a village at the Hornspine's western edge, whose buildings are composed of the natural clay of the region. The Hornèds of Imtower also make many clay implements which they take to the markets of western Acirca.

Other than the Hornèds themselves, the Machine Exile Caprillo is the main source of information on the Hornspine and its inhabitants. He wrote about its history and customs until his death in Red 244.[2]
