Hunter is the chief Hunter of the white-marked tribe of Fluters in Vattu. Although his personal name is unknown, judging from his mark it would have been five or six syllables long. He dresses in an orange tunic, bound by a knotted cord, and carries a spear adorned with Shira raptor feathers.
Early in the story, Hunter clashed with Priestess over whether or not to begin the upriver-move, arguing to disregard fate and tradition for the sake of baby Vattu. When instructing Siro and Tarro how to hunt, he remarked that Fluters "are not slaves to the turnings", as free will is what sets them apart from animals.
At one point, he receives two scars on his forehead while fighting Garu Cats (see p049).
