Karán is a soldier of the Torch in Order of Tales. He is led by Tarrka, the Blackbird captain that discovers Obilik at the Grey Castle. Karán argues that following Obilik would be the same mistake as following Rog Torchlord, whose sudden conquest of the Blackbirds led to zealous devotion. He also thinks that "one ancient king" is not enough to bring freedom to the Blackbirds.
