Nom's Saga is the third story told by Koark in Order of Tales. He tells it in the depths of Stonepalm to King Pronomb, after the Blackbirds have destroyed the Hornèds' library. It concerns the origin of the kingdom of the Hornèds-of-the-Palm.

Nom's Saga

Burnt black was the sky in the age of

Vurcarre. Burrows in the wide plains

were home to the Hornèds.

Gramat Holedweller, son of

Gramat Rockturner, was their king.

Each night over the plain flew

Vurcarre, a screeching, whirling

serpent; a thing of claws and smoke.

It's eight arms destroyed what they

touched, and it took many lives.

The serpent dwelt far north, in

lands frightening to the Hornèds-

of-the-plain, in the midst of five

peaks: a great hand of stone. No

Hornèd would confront Vurcarre.

In this time was born a Hornèd

named Nom, unruly and sharp-

spoken. Never did he belong in

the plains. In his youth he saw

Vurcarre, and vowed to kill it.

Nom forged swords and axes

for the Hornèds-of-the-plain to

use, and he gathered three score

and four Hornèds to make the

journey north.

But the king forbade their

campaign, and Nom's warriors

were arrested and held in the

burrows. The serpent must not be

provoked, said Gramat.

That night Vurcarre came, tearing

at the earth in a great rage. And

the guards were eaten, and King

Gramat was wounded, and

Nom's warriors escaped.

They set off after the serpent.

The land grew rocky, and Nom

felt at home. At last, the sixty-

five came to the five peaks, the

Stone Palm.

There slept Vurcarre, having

eaten its fill. And the Hornèds

approached, and they stabbed it

deeply with their swords.

And Vurcarre was frightened to

see Hornèds in its very home,

and for this it fled, bleeding

blackness and howling.

Nom named himself king of the

Hornèds-of-the-Palm, and from

him are descended all of the

Stone Palm's kings. A town of

stone was built there.

And the serpent did not

return, knowing that the Palm

now belonged to the Hornèds,

its foes.
