Priestess (role)
From Rice Boy Wiki
The position of Priestess (called Shamaness on the model sheet) is a named occupational role in Fluter society. Traditionally filled by a female Fluter, this role centers on the religious life of the Fluter tribe, such as their relationship with Ata and their fulfillment of various ceremonies.
A Priestess is easily recognized by her heavy Torgut-fur cloak, which has a Shira-skull clasp. This piece of clothing may be the central indication of Priestly status, as the forehead-bands are for the Hunter. The Priestess also wears clothes decorated with other bones, skulls, and bright red Shira feathers. Furthermore, she is the only Fluter to wear footwear-- in this case, bulky cloth or leather boots.
Priestesses are also the keepers of various special ritual items. For the white-marked tribe, these include:
- a tooth necklace and green powder used in birth rituals[1]
- a necklace of Torgut spinal plates used in funereal rituals[2]
- a bowl of water that signifies the River Tarria[3]
- a map of Fluter encampments along their migratory circuit[4]
Some of these items are also shown arrayed in front of Vattu in the "Possession" print.[5]
In the white-marked tribe
So far in Vattu, the white-marked tribe has seen two Fluters fill the role of Priestess. The first was an older Fluter who became Priestess before the beginning of the comic in Blue 855. Thus, she is only known by the name of Priestess. The second is Vanni, who unconventionally succeeded Priestess as Priest. This process is illustrated in the "Possession" print, which shows Vanni following Priestess (to Vattu's right).[6]
