Rog (pronounced /rɔg/[1]) is an ancient, enigmatic warlord from the early Grey Age, who was responsible for the downfall of the Machine Dominion. In the early Red Age, his name was taken on by Rog Torchlord, the equally mysterious villain from Order of Tales who has some kind of unknown connection to the original Rog.

During the Machine Dominion, Rog was a personal slave of the Machine Lord Omirm, one of the original Machine Sons. In Order of Tales, Koark tells the story Rog, which explains that Rog's "gray body was torn and twisted and his eyes darkened" by Omirm's abuse. However, Rog got his revenge on the Machine Man, as the slave tore apart his master's body, precipitating the end of the Dominion and the beginning of the Grey Age.

Rog traveled north from Omirm's Tower, gathering an army and conquering the surrounding lands of eastern Acirca. He eventually built the Grey Castle over "a cavern full of ancient magic", from which he presided over his growing territory. Rog paid mercenaries to hunt down remaining Machine Men, who would then bring their body parts to his Castle, as depicted in "An Offering to Rog" from Portraits of Overside: Warriors.

Among all the warlords who arose during the Grey Age, only Rog is remembered, due to his fame and brutality. Nonetheless, his story is not widely known, especially because the Blackbirds and Shade-kin-- who later lived in what was Rog's territory-- do not read or write, and thus never recorded tales of Rog.
