Rog Torchlord
From Rice Boy Wiki
- This article is about the early Red Age warlord from Order of Tales. For the Grey Age era warlord, see Rog
Rog Torchlord (Rog II in the Order of Tales Book III Appendix) is the secretive leader of the Torch, a group of east Acircan marauders, who is the main antagonist of Order of Tales. His name comes from the warlord Rog, the infamous Grey Age warlord and former slave who caused the downfall of the Machine Dominion. He first appeared in eastern Acirca in Red 221, at which time he conquered Chira and won the allegiance of the Blackbirds and Shade-kin. Over the next ten years, the Torchlord solidified his control over east Acirca, which included renaming Chira to "Torch-Town", forming an alliance with the Black Teeth, and slowly infiltrating western Acirca. However, when he learned in Red 233 of the creation of the Bottle Woman, Rog increased his attention on the west, precipitating the events of Order of Tales.[1]
Identity
His true identity and connection to the original Rog is unknown throughout Order of Tales, but there are a number of hints throughout the story that offer clues to his identity:
- When asked by the Bottle Woman, Æthirus explains that Rog Torchlord is similar to the original Rog, as "his eyes are blank", although the Torchlord's body is "burned to blackness...beyond death".[2]
- Rog's possible immortality may have some connection to the Black Drink. His second-in-command Chasmus is addicted to the stuff, and Bottle Woman (who has an enigmatic connection to Rog) was created by Extranji, who peddled the Black Drink (called the "Blacksick"[3] among Fin-Folk)
- He possesses the magic, unbreakable blade that is Obilik Blacksword's namesake.[4] Although it is unknown how he came to possess the sword, the Torchlord has systematically burned libraries and has recruited his army only from illiterate peoples.[5] This indicates that the secret of the sword and its origin is contained within a story-- possibly even the mysterious Ascent of the Bone Ziggurat.[6]
