Sahta Script translations

From Rice Boy Wiki

Jump to: navigation, search

This page contains transcriptions of the Sahta Script used in Evan Dahm's Vattu, short stories, as well as uses of it outside the comic. Translations are given in quotation marks, along with extensions of those translations provided in parentheses. Square brackets indicate that the translation is uncertain, usually due to spelling (e.g. C vs K or A vs U) or pronunciation.

In Vattu

The edict

  • Shown from p103 to p106 (read left to right):
    • …"(te)rritory named Flutela(nds)"…
    • …"(sou/nor)thern extremity"…
    • …"t Splitcanyon is"…
    • …"t of the one true holy e(mperor?)"…
    • …"people(,) its subject"…
    • …"Tarrus(,) his mortal"...
  • p103, top seal: Sahta Script "K" (presumably Carparia)
  • p103, bottom seal: Sahta Script "T" (presumably Calirus' last initial)
  • p103, signature: "Calirus [T-R-Y-]"
    • The second word is Calirus' family name, written without vowels.

The battle in Grenth

The soldiers' map

  • p139, panel 5: "Flutelands" (detail of full map)
  • p140: "-lands" (detail of full map)
  • p141: (various portions of words from full map)

The graves

  • p186, panel 4, top: "Tallano Carmarus"
  • p186, panel 4, bottom: "Oralus Carrat"
    • Evan Dahm provided the correct spellings in a Formspring post.[1]
  • p186, panel 5: "-m(a)rus" (close-up of the top text from panel 4)
  • p187, panels 1 & 4: (other views of the grave markers)

Sahta

  • p201, panel 3, on the door: "(untranslated number) Shade W(ay)"[2]
    • This is likely an address
  • p201, panel 3, on the pole: "[Afrat]"
    • There may be other letters underneath the T
  • p201, panel 6, on the door: (another view of the same door sign from panel 3)
  • p201, panel 6, on the pole: "(Capi)tal"
  • p202, panel 1: "T"
    • Likely the ending of "Sahta", but possibly could be "[Afrat]"
  • p202, panel 4: "Shade W(ay)"
  • p203, panel 4: "Capi(tal)"
  • p203, panel 5: "(Ca)pita(l)"

Capital Street

All of the following are on p204.

Panel 1
  • Side of the closest fountain: "Tennia Cross"[3]
  • Pole of the closest fountain: "(Tennia) Cross"
  • Side of the second-closest fountain: "[Ol-D-G-]"
  • Pole of the second-closest fountain: "[-d-get/-d-gate]"
    • Combined, these seem to suggest "Old Gate" for the second-closest fountain
  • Side of the furthest fountain: (illegible)
  • Pole of the furthest fountain: "[SH-D-?-]"
    • This might be the same "Shade Way" fountain as on p202
Panel 3
  • Kneeling statue (both sides): "Distant"
  • Statue with jug: "Giving"
  • Statue with sword and shield: "Venge-" (possibly "Vengeful")
  • Building sign: "The Crossing"

Fountain behind the statue

  • p205, panel 1, left side of pole: "K" (possibly beginning of "Capital")
  • p205, panel 1, near side of pole: "M" or "Ma-" (unclear if that is an A or an outline)

Morrian's House

  • p205, panel 4: Carparia (both signs)
  • p206, panel 3: "-ria" (presumably the ending of "Carparia")
  • p208, panel 2, the seal: "T" (presumably the initial of Calirus' last name)
  • p208, panel 2, on the outside of the scroll: "K-L-R-[S]" (Calirus)
    • This is more visible in a closer view of the page[4]
  • p208, panel 2, first line on the map: "-n-s"
  • p208, panel 2, second line on the map: "-por"
  • p208, panel 2, third line on the map: "-caragi" (may be just Caragi)
  • p208, panel 4: "Cali[r]u-" (Calirus, obscured by Morrian's finger)

Grenth colony

  • p211, panel 3: "Sahta"
  • p212 map, left side of border: "Sahta", (untranslated number)
  • p212 map, right side of border: "Savage"
  • p212, box in background: "Surrau"[5]
  • p214, panel 4: "Sahta"
  • p214, panel 6: "Savage"

Barracks

Morrian's study

  • p227, top book: "(d ʒo ni z) [Cara-"
    • The first word may be "Journeys", but it is missing an R. The second word is a name and could be Carrat, Oralus' family name.
  • p227, bottom book: "Conquering -as-"

Capital Street (background)

  • p270, right side of fountain sign: "Capital"
  • p270, left side of fountain sign: "[-mrket]"
  • p270, bottom of fountain sign: ends in L
  • p270, side of building: "[-l, -i(d/n/r)zir]"
  • p270, hanging banner: "[kalraldz]"
    • Could be something like "Kalrald's", the name of a store. However, the first L does not look quite like an L, but rather a sideways S, and it might be a previously-unseen letter.

In Settling Down

  • p5, bottom book: "The Rise and Fall"

The Vattu site header

For a short time before Vattu began, Dahm changed the header on rice-boy.com to a version showing the Esterteng with Sahta-Script labels. The file can be found at [1].
