The One Electronic (also known as "T-O-E") is an immortal Machine Man who, along with Calabash and Golgo, is one of the Searchers in the service of Ridrom's Prophecy. Due to his longevity and iconic appearance, T-O-E has featured in nearly all of Dahm's Overside comics, and is present on the large banner that Dahm brings with him to conventions.[1] Thus, along with Rice Boy, he is one of the more well-known characters from Overside.

Age

In Rice Boy, T-O-E states that he is 3000 years old,[2] which, if taken to be an exact age, puts his birthdate sometime in Green 444. His childhood departure from the Black Teeth and the encounter T-O-E relives in Memoar therefore take place in the late Green Age, the same Age as the events of The Tusks of Wusterim and "The Tusks Fall" from Warriors. T-O-E would therefore be roughly 130-200 years old when he was selected as Searcher.

Names

"The One Electronic" is really just a nickname, as T-O-E's original Machine Man name is Terrin Oculon. However, T-O-E prefers to go by nicknames in his interactions with Overside at large. Some other names he's held are:

Appearance

Face

T-O-E is distinctive among Machine Men due to his monitor face, which displays seemingly-random black and white stills from movies and cartoons. He shares this feature with his two brothers, Red and Little Blue.[3] The design of T-O-E's face was influenced by Surrealist art, as the images are meant to represent subconscious "visual static".[4] Appropriately, many images in T-O-E's face are taken from Un Chien Andalou (a Surrealist film) and cartoons by Max Fleischer, creator of Betty Boop and Popeye. For example, the first three images on p001 are from roughly the first ten seconds of Un Chien Andalou,[5] and the image on p200 is from Fleischer's 1932 In My Merry Oldsmobile[6]. T-O-E's face has also shown characters from current popular culture-- notably, the last panel on p018 features Ray Smuckles from Achewood.

Members of the Koala Wallop forum have tried to categorize the images from T-O-E's face, although there is as yet no exhaustive catalog.[7][8][9]

Body

T-O-E often wears long cloaks, capes, or overcoats which conceal much of his body. Around his neck, he wears a necklace with a winding key that was once attached to his head. He also has a Mark of Seen that he received at some point in the past.

T-O-E is slightly over six feet tall.[10]

Habits

T-O-E smokes, although it is unknown what he is smoking or how that is achieved (as he has no visible mouth or ventilation). While he smokes from a pipe in Order of Tales, he smokes cigarettes (that he rolls himself[11]) in Rice Boy.

Abilities

T-O-E has the unexplained ability to shoot electricity from his hands. He had this ability even before he became a Searcher,[12] and no other Machine Man has demonstrated the capability. Thus, this power may be unique to T-O-E. When he creates lightning from his hands, it does not harm the gloves that T-O-E often wears (although they do steam slightly[13]). However, if T-O-E uses another object to direct the electricity, it gets burned.[14]
