Tree of Thought

A Tree of Thought is a rare, nearly-extinct kind of tree that bears an addictive and magical purple fruit. Those who eat the fruit become happier, healthier, and have their dreams "filled...almost to bursting"[1], while running the risk of being consumed entirely by desire for the Tree's fruit. The people of Whetton were one such case; as Arctaur tells Rice Boy, the Whettons were driven to war with Suntown when their own Tree died, as they desired the fruit at any cost.
Only three trees have been shown or mentioned so far in the comics:
- The Tree of Whetton, which "decided to die".[2]
- The Tree of Suntown, which was burned down by the residents of Suntown to stop the invaders from Whetton.
- The Tree of the Black Teeth, which grows in the garden on the eastern side of the fortress.[3]
Additionally, the published map of Overside shows a city of New Whetton in northern Wusterim, which suggests that the Whettons found another Tree and built a city around it, as Arctaur surmised.[4] Furthermore, the seed planted by Knosus in Chapter 16[5] may be a seed for a future Tree, based on its visual similarity to the base design of the Whetton Tree.[6]
