The Trench
From Rice Boy Wiki
The Trench (sometimes "The Great Trench") is an enormous pit that traces a half-circle across Acirca and Wusterim, and passes through the center of Overside at the island in the middle of the Circle Sea. It divides Skortch from Karrkín, as well as the Skortridge from the Estring Mountains. This strange geographical feature is as-yet unexplained, yet it plays an important role in both Rice Boy and The Jewel of Brambool.
In Rice Boy, Rice Boy casts himself to the bottom of the Trench, where he comes to discover the secret underwater entrance to Seen. In The Jewel of Brambool, which follows the aforementioned scene in Rice Boy, Huff decides to travel to the city of Brambool, an ancient settlement of unknown creatures which is the only known city in the Trench.
Inhabitants
The Trench is home to a number of strange plants and animals. Many such plants are bioluminescent, reminiscent of creatures that inhabit the deepest ocean areas on Earth. Some native beings include the giant "fungus commodious"[1] (as Huff calls them), strange raised tree-like organisms[2], multicolored fish[3], and the "crimson egg-flowers"[4]. The mighty Fire-Slug of Brambool also resides in the Trench, and (predictably) lives near Brambool.
The only known speaking creatures native to the Trench are the "Watchers of the Trenchlands" (as they are called by Huff). Of course, it is unknown if Huff himself lives in the Trench, or if his first visit was with Rice Boy. Narration in The Jewel indicates that he has some knowledge of its past and inhabitants.[5]
