Trills
From Rice Boy Wiki
The Trills (also Trill-Folk) are mysterious microscopic creatures who once flourished on Overside. Trills are monocular, and instead of nose or mouth, they have a long proboscis. Trill-folk, in groups, form relatively-sophisticated agrarian-level communities with individual divisions of labor. Separate communities can send messages to each other through Seers (see "Hats" below), although often this is a haphazard process.[1]
Trills live in houses, which vary in shape; some appear to be normal huts,[2] while others look like large termite colonies.[3]

History
Trill-folk were once abundant creatures, sustained by the presence of the Avatar of Mind. However, after the Plague in the Blue Age, Trill populations begin shrinking, as "a mindless world cannot support the Trills".[4] This process has made Trill communities in the Red Age extremely rare and valuable. Wearing Trills as if they were jewelry, like the Baron Gecrimaug does, is a sign of extreme wealth.
The Trills may be the counterparts, at some level, of the White Formless, according to an illustration in the Library of Seen.[5]
Language
The language of the Trills, known as Trill-Tongue,[6] is the embodiment of a "strange and subtle power" that once covered Overside and connected its people.[7] When spoken, Trill-Tongue appears as abstract ideographic characters formed by different combinations of circles and circular shapes. By speaking Trill-Tongue in a certain way, one can alter reality. While this is only accomplished with one particular "word" in Rice Boy,[8] other Trill-Tongue words may influence reality in similar ways.
On the Koala Wallop forums, fans of Rice Boy have attempted their own analyses and interpretations of the Trill-Tongue dialog in that comic.[9]
Hats
Each Trill wears its own special hat, which represents its job in the Trill community. The different kinds of hats seen in Rice Boy are listed below (in the order they appear), along with the (presumably) related job.
- p173, Fish-head hat: Fisherman
- p184, Pencil tip hat: Related to writing; could be accountant or chronicler
- p218, Red bell-shaped hat: Fruitpicker or gatherer
- p218, Blue translucent hat: Bottler
- p287, Pitchfork hat: Farmer
- p288, Plain green hat: Hatter
- p293, Eyeball hat: Seer
Additional hats with unknown meaning are seen on p220 and p288 as the roofs of the Trills' huts.
