User:Banjaloupe/Appearances of the color red in Vattu
From Rice Boy Wiki
During a Ustream on 2 December 2010, Evan Dahm said that appearances of bright red throughout the comic Vattu indicate significant moments, objects, or people. Thus, this page compiles all uses of that color, and notes the significance of the use when known.
In relation to the world-in-a-box, bright red is associated with "the hunt", and set in opposition to the color green and the spiritual elements of Ata. We can therefore assume that red, as it appears below, might also carry these same implications.
Book 1
- p002: Siro wears a red cape over his tunic.
- p003 & p004: Priestess incorporates red Shira feathers into her clothing.
- p007: During the 2 December Ustream, Dahm said that the first instance of bright red in the comic was baby Vattu's swaddling cloth. However, it appears to be more of a brown or dull green color. This may be due to the green cast of the fire, or Dahm may have misremembered the color of the cloth.
- p008: Seri also wears a red cape over her dress.
- p011: The Shira's wing-tip and facial feathers are bright red, as well as the leaves on the tree.
- p017: A Shira-- possibly the same one as on p11-- flies over Vanni. He is on his way to Priestess' tent, where he makes eye contact with (and possibly sees) Vattu for the first time.
- p020: Red-leaves trees top the hill where Hunter teaches Tarro how to track Torgut.
- p026: The eyes of the Dead appear bright red due to reflection from the setting sun. Red-leaved trees also grow on the hill where the Stones of the Dead are first seen.
- p030: A cloth sitting next to baby Vattu is bright red.
- p034: Flecks of bright red blood come from the Garu Cat's injured ear.
- p036: The cloth seen previously on p30 is wrapped around Vattu when she is taken by Seri to be washed in the River Tarria.
- p038: The world-in-a-box is discovered. The box itself is made of red wood (or wood that has been stained red).
- p045: Seri's red blanket is wrapped around the world-in-a-box, when one of the Dead attempts to take it.
- p050: Seri continues to hide the box in the red blanket the next morning, when Vanni asks what she's doing.
- p052: The gladius used by the apparent leader of the Dead has a red guard and pommel. This can be seen more clearly on p054.
- p055: First blood is drawn from the Dead, who also bleed red.
- p058: The sword seen on p58 is used to kill Hunter, eliciting a stream of red blood.
- p060: A single red Shira feather is laid on Hunter's corpse.
- p061: Vattu is once again wrapped in the red cloth, and is being held by Seri.
- p064: Vattu is still wrapped in the red cloth, but is now carried by Priestess.
- p065: The world-in-a-box, now wrapped in a brownish cloth, is dropped and revealed.
- This may mirror Seri's own dress, which is a red cape over a brownish dress.
- p071: The world-in-a-box is opened, revealing its red and green pieces. More on the significance of red/green opposition can be seen in the Cosmology section.
- p072: Grown Vattu is seen for the first time. She is wearing a bright red cape, and hunting a (red) bleeding (red-feathered) Shira.
- p081: The red world-in-a-box rests between Vanni and Priestess during their final conversation.
- p084: Farani is shown to wear a red tunic under a brown cape (the reverse of Siro).
- This may be significant, as these two are the only hunters to wear bright red, and they are sent out to meet the strange upriver hunters on p097.
- p087: A red Shira feather is also laid on the body of Priestess.
- p094: A Shira flies over Vattu when she awakens, possibly portending her discovery on the next page.
- p095: Vattu discovers the upriver hunters' camp, which includes three, huge, bright red tents and a bright red banner.
- p097: Priest sends Siro and Farani, the two hunters with red clothing, to meet the five strange hunters.
- p101: Elements of Morrian's garb and weaponry are red.
