Vanni is a Fluter from the white-marked tribe. He dresses in a yellow tunic, and uses a cane, as he is crippled.[1] This, according to Hunter, is because of an early move upriver by the tribe of Fluters, when Vanni was a small child.
At the beginning of Book 1, he is shown as a child. During this time, he is mainly cared for by Seri, although he is sometimes suspicious of her, and seems to blame her for Hunter's fate. At this point he also has a pet Trigg, which he carries along when the Fluters change camps.[2]
Vanni is there when Vattu was born in Blue 855. He blames the infant for the hardships that befall the tribe, as they are forced to stay in the south for too long into the cold season.
In Blue 875, the second half of Book I, Vanni unconventionally becomes the Priest of the tribe after the passing of Priestess. Almost immediately, his leadership is tested when Siro reports the arrival of a strange band of upriver hunters.[3]
